Chapter 22

Haddix jumped out of the truck before Brayden had even put it in park. The entire ride, his wolf had been riled up by the scent of Vesa’s emotions that she’d tried and failed miserably to hide. The closer they got to BlackLodge, the stronger her scent had grown, and when they looked down at the campgrounds, and the acrid scent of her fear filled the cab, he’d had to get out. Explaining to Vesa that she was safe wouldn’t do any good. He knew because he’d tried that. She needed proof and the only way to do that was to show her, which meant she needed time. Time. It was the one thing he couldn’t control at BlackLodge.

Watching Brayden ease the truck into the parking lot beside the big house, he doubled his pace so he could be there to open Vesa’s door. Scent riling him up or not, she deserved to have him there at her side and guiding her in these unfamiliar surroundings.

Noah shot out of the truck first and raced to the house yelling, “I got four-wheeler duty!”

Using the four-wheeler to plow the sidewalks and paths throughout the campgrounds was one of Noah’s favorite chores, probably because it was one of the easiest.

The back door of the truck opened, and Haddix rushed to pull it open. Vesa was short, and the truck was jacked up, so without asking, he reached up and lifted her out, settling her on her feet before he said, “Welcome to BlackLodge.”

She looked around, avoiding his gaze. “It’s a campground.”

“Yeah.” He looked around too trying to see it from a newcomer’s eyes. “We’re currently closed, but come summer, it’ll be a zoo.” He dropped his eyes back to her and caught her looking at him.

“Now what?” she asked.

He liked how direct she was. Lifting a hand, he motioned toward the house. “Don’t know about you, but after a long trip I like a hot shower, a full belly, and some much-needed rest.”

She’d turned to head the direction he’d indicated but stopped and looked at him out of the corner of her eye suspiciously.

Smirking, he shook his head. “It’s not a joke, Vesa. Me and the boys got a lot to do because we don’t usually leave the place unattended, but we’re gonna get you and Afften settled first.” Feeling bold, he reached down and grabbed her hand. “Come on.”

She let him lead her to the main house, and he struggled to ignore the way her hand shook in his. He kept telling his wolf she was just cold and the snarly little
